Trabzonspor to Renew Interest in Paul Onuachu Ahead of January Transfer

Trabzonspor Set to Revive Pursuit of Paul Onuachu in January Transfer Window.

Turkish Super Lig giants Trabzonspor are gearing up to reignite their interest in Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu as the January transfer window approaches. The Super Eagles forward could be on the move again after a tumultuous year with English Championship side Southampton.

Paul Onuachu’s Challenging Journey at Southampton

The towering forward, who stands at 6 feet 7 inches, joined Southampton from Belgian side Genk two seasons ago. However, he struggled to make a significant impact at St. Mary’s due to managerial decisions that limited his playing opportunities. In a bid to revitalize his career, Onuachu moved to Trabzonspor on a season-long loan last season.

A Stellar Loan Spell in Turkey

During his time in Turkey, Onuachu showcased his goal-scoring prowess, netting an impressive 17 goals and providing four assists in just 25 appearances for Trabzonspor. His stellar performances quickly made him a fan favorite, and there was widespread speculation that the Turkish club would secure his services on a permanent basis. However, negotiations with Southampton fell through, leaving the Nigerian international to return to Hampshire.

A New Chapter Under Ivan Juric at Southampton

The 2023/2024 season has been a mixed bag for the 30-year-old striker. Under former coach Russell Martin, Onuachu struggled to get game time, but fortunes changed following Ivan Juric’s appointment in December. Juric appears to have more confidence in the Nigerian, granting him increased minutes on the pitch.

Trabzonspor’s Renewed Interest

Despite his improved situation at Southampton, reports indicate that Trabzonspor remain keen on bringing Onuachu back to Turkey. According to The Saints Centre, the Turkish outfit is prepared to reopen discussions with Southampton for either a permanent deal or another loan spell. Southampton are reportedly valuing the striker at over €12 million, a fee that could pose a challenge for Trabzonspor, who may instead explore a loan agreement.

Southampton’s Stance and Potential Challenges

While Trabzonspor’s interest is strong, Onuachu’s future might hinge on Juric’s plans. The new Southampton manager appears to appreciate Onuachu’s qualities, making it potentially difficult for the Saints to part ways with the Nigerian forward during the January window.

With the transfer market nearing its mid-season peak, all eyes will be on whether Trabzonspor can successfully negotiate a deal to bring Onuachu back to the Super Lig or if Southampton will choose to hold onto their towering talisman.
