Sunshine Stars’ Coach Bala Abubakar Eyes Top 10 Finish in NPFL Second Phase
Sunshine Stars’ Technical Adviser, Bala Abubakar, has voiced his unwavering confidence in his team’s readiness to face the challenges of the second phase of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season. His optimism is fueled by a series of adjustments, preparations, and a clear determination to elevate Sunshine Stars into the league’s upper echelons.
Abubakar, reflecting on their upcoming reverse fixture against Ikorodu City, stressed the need for focus and intensity. He acknowledged the strength of their opponents, who are currently performing well in the league, but reaffirmed his belief in Sunshine Stars’ ability to deliver results. Despite suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat in their first-leg encounter, Abubakar is determined to reverse their fortunes and secure points in the rematch.
The experienced coach, formerly with Kwara United, has been relentless in his efforts to refine the team. He and his technical crew have identified areas of improvement and worked tirelessly to enhance the squad’s overall performance. Among the significant changes are the inclusion of new players, handpicked to bring quality and depth to the team. These additions have also created healthy competition for positions, which Abubakar believes will result in a more compact and resilient unit on the field.
A key focus for the coach has been addressing the team’s struggles with converting goal-scoring opportunities. He pointed out that poor decision-making and a lack of composure in front of goal were major factors in their previous shortcomings. However, recent friendly matches have shown promising signs, with the team demonstrating improved efficiency and capitalizing on chances more effectively.

Although Sunshine Stars are not currently threatened by relegation, Abubakar has set a clear and ambitious target: breaking into the top 10 of the NPFL standings. He views this as the immediate goal and a stepping stone to greater achievements in the league. With a renewed sense of purpose, strategic improvements, and the backing of their fans, Sunshine Stars aim to establish themselves as strong contenders in the NPFL.
