Premier League Clubs Leeds United, Aston Villa, West Ham Eye Southampton Starlet Matheus Fernandes in Summer Transfer Battle.
Portuguese prodigy Matheus Fernandes is at the center of a potential summer transfer tussle, with Leeds United, Aston Villa, and West Ham United reportedly keeping a close eye on the Southampton midfielder’s future.
The 20-year-old, who joined the Saints from Sporting Lisbon, has emerged as one of the few shining lights in Southampton’s turbulent 2024-25 Premier League campaign. Despite his side’s struggles, Fernandes made a remarkable 35 appearances (33 starts), scoring three goals and providing two assists.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa have been particularly attentive to the situation surrounding Fernandes. With European qualification already secured for the 2025-26 season, Unai Emery and Villa’s recruitment team are actively evaluating youthful prospects to bolster their squad ahead of a potentially demanding continental schedule.
Leeds United and West Ham are also believed to be seriously considering a move for Fernandes, with all three clubs recognizing the player’s versatility and maturity beyond his years. Capable of operating across various midfield and forward roles, Fernandes offers tactical flexibility—an asset highly coveted in modern football.

Southampton signed Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon for a fee in the region of £15 million and tied him down to a long-term contract running until 2029. His performances have not gone unnoticed, as he was recently named Southampton’s Player of the Season. That accolade has reportedly prompted the club to place a £25 million valuation on the Portugal U21 international.
Given Southampton’s likely relegation and the influx of interest, the Saints may be forced to consider offers, particularly those involving a loan with an option or obligation to buy—an approach that could balance both their financial and squad-building needs.
For Fernandes, a move to a stable Premier League club like Aston Villa or West Ham may offer a more suitable development path than joining a newly promoted or relegation-threatened side. Already a mainstay in Portugal’s U21 squad, he will be eager to take the next step and eventually break into the senior national team.
Although a final decision may depend on whether Southampton’s valuation is met, Fernandes’s future appears increasingly likely to be away from St Mary’s. Whether that move materializes this summer or next remains to be seen, but there’s little doubt that the young midfielder is destined for greater heights.
