Orlando Pirates Set to Miss Out on Bafana Bafana Star Target!
Orlando Pirates are gearing up for a busy January transfer window, with several deals on the table. However, the Buccaneers may face disappointment as they risk losing out on a high-profile Bafana Bafana international target.
Orlando Pirates Eye Active Transfer Window
Currently sitting second in the Betway Premiership and with a trophy already in their cabinet this season, Orlando Pirates are not resting on their laurels. The club is reportedly keen on strengthening their squad during the January transfer window, with three key signings anticipated.
Targets in Sight
Among the potential new additions are Polokwane City duo Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi, both of whom have caught the attention of the Pirates’ scouting team. Another likely acquisition is midfielder Siphelele Luthuli, a former Chippa United player who has been training with the club since late 2024. Luthuli’s signing is expected to be finalized soon, bolstering the midfield options available to coach Jose Riveiro.
The Sinoxolo Kwayiba Saga
While these deals appear to be moving forward, the same cannot be said for Pirates’ pursuit of Bafana Bafana international Sinoxolo Kwayiba. Kwayiba, who has been a standout performer for Chippa United, was initially linked with a move to the Buccaneers. However, according to recent reports from Soccer-Laduma, this transfer may not materialize.

Kwayiba’s current contract with Chippa United is set to expire in June 2025. The midfielder joined Chippa from Pretoria Callies in 2023 on a two-year deal, and the club has now tabled an improved two-year extension to keep him until June 2027.
Why Pirates May Miss Out
A source close to the situation revealed that Chippa United’s strategy is designed to secure their interests, whether or not Kwayiba ultimately makes the move to Pirates. “The interest from Orlando Pirates is still there, but Chippa United does not want to lose him for free. By extending his contract, Chippa ensures they’ll benefit financially if Pirates make an offer, or they’ll retain his services for the next two years,” the source explained.
Kwayiba’s decision appears to hinge on securing stability for his career. While he remains tempted by a potential move to Orlando Pirates, the allure of a solid two-year deal with Chippa United could outweigh the uncertainty of transfer negotiations.
Win-Win for Chippa United
The source emphasized how Chippa United stands to benefit regardless of the outcome. “If Kwayiba joins Pirates, the club will cash in on his transfer fee. If he stays, they retain a valuable player who can contribute to their success over the next two seasons. It’s a favorable situation for both Chippa and Kwayiba,” the source concluded.
Pirates’ January Transfer Objectives
For Orlando Pirates, the January window remains an opportunity to solidify their squad as they aim to challenge for the Betway Premiership title. Securing deals for Appollis, Matuludi, and Luthuli would provide a significant boost. However, missing out on a player of Kwayiba’s caliber may leave fans questioning whether the club has done enough to reinforce their roster.
