Erling Haaland Injury Update: Pep Guardiola Speaks Ahead of Real Madrid Clash
Pep Guardiola Speaks Ahead of Real Madrid Clash and Addresses Haaland’s Fitness After Injury Scare.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an injury update on Erling Haaland following the team’s 4-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Haaland, who captained City for the first time in a competitive match, started his 25th consecutive Premier League game but was unable to find the net. Instead, new signing Omar Marmoush stole the show with a stunning first-half hat-trick, while James McAtee sealed the win with a late strike.
However, concern arose when Haaland went down clutching his right knee just before full-time. The Norwegian striker appeared in discomfort, raising fears of a serious injury.
Haaland’s Injury: What Happened?
During the closing minutes of the game, Haaland attempted to close down an opponent when he suddenly grimaced in pain and clutched his knee. The sight alarmed fans and pundits alike, with Sky Sports analyst Paul Merson fearing the worst.
“As he moved in to press, it looked like his knee gave way. He didn’t look comfortable at all, shaking his head. Pep Guardiola even put his head in his hands,” Merson said during the broadcast.
The fact that Haaland’s injury occurred without contact raised concerns of a potential ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury, which could have sidelined him for months. However, Merson later reassured fans, stating:
“He walked off the pitch, which is a good sign. Hopefully, he’ll be fine for Wednesday night against Real Madrid.”
Guardiola’s Update on Haaland’s Injury
Following the match, Haaland was seen walking back onto the pitch, applauding the fans, which suggested the injury might not be severe.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Guardiola addressed Haaland’s condition, saying:
“When he went down, everyone was scared. But he got up, walking and smiling as usual. I didn’t speak to him directly, but the medical team hasn’t given me bad news. Hopefully, he’ll be fine for Real Madrid.”
While Guardiola remains optimistic, Haaland’s final fitness status will be confirmed on Tuesday, when City conducts a pre-match press conference ahead of their decisive Champions League clash.
Man City’s Injury Concerns Before Real Madrid Clash
Manchester City faces Real Madrid next Wednesday in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. The English champions trail 3-2 from the first leg, where Haaland netted twice to take his incredible UEFA Champions League tally to 49 goals in just 48 appearances.
Apart from Haaland, Guardiola is also closely monitoring the fitness of key defenders Rúben Dias and Nathan Aké, both of whom missed the Newcastle game due to injury.
“Dias and Aké were not ready to play today, but we are hopeful they will recover in time for Real Madrid,” Guardiola said.
With Haaland, Dias, and Aké all in doubt, Manchester City fans will be eagerly awaiting Tuesday’s official injury update as the club prepares for a crucial European night in Madrid.
