Alex Iwobi Shines with Two Milestones in Fulham’s Defeat to West Ham
Nigerian playmaker Alex Iwobi achieved two remarkable milestones during Fulham’s thrilling 3-2 loss to West Ham United at the London Stadium on Friday night. Despite his exceptional individual performance, Fulham’s defensive lapses allowed the Hammers to secure victory in what was Graham Potter’s Premier League debut as West Ham manager.
Iwobi’s Stellar Performance Amid Defensive Struggles
Alex Iwobi stood out for Fulham, scoring both goals in a game marked by costly errors from his teammates. Andreas Pereira and goalkeeper Bernd Leno were at fault for West Ham’s goals, as Carlos Soler, Tomáš Souček, and Lucas Paquetá capitalized on defensive blunders to seal the win for the Hammers.
West Ham took control of the game with two goals in quick succession. Soler opened the scoring in the 31st minute, followed just two minutes later by Souček, who punished Fulham’s disorganized defense.
However, Iwobi pulled one back for Fulham early in the second half. In the 51st minute, his dangerous cross evaded everyone, including West Ham’s goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański, to find the back of the net. Fulham’s hopes of a comeback were short-lived, as another defensive error in the 67th minute allowed Paquetá to restore West Ham’s two-goal advantage.
Iwobi struck again in the 78th minute with a goal mirroring his first. His pinpoint cross slipped past Fabiański and the West Ham defense, with Harry Wilson narrowly missing a touch.
Iwobi’s Premier League Milestones
Iwobi’s brace marked a career milestone, as he surpassed his Premier League goal tally for Arsenal and Everton. The Nigerian star now has 12 league goals for Fulham in just 51 appearances, compared to 11 goals in 100 games for Arsenal and six in 123 matches for Everton.
With seven Premier League goals this season, Iwobi has already set a personal best, surpassing his previous record of five goals in a season.
Climbing the Nigerian Premier League Scoring Ranks
Iwobi’s two goals also elevated him to seventh on the all-time list of Nigerian goal-scorers in Premier League history, with a total of 29 goals. He overtook Victor Anichebe (27 goals) and Obafemi Martins (28 goals). While Iwobi is still behind legends like Peter Odemwingie (37 goals), Nwankwo Kanu (54 goals), and Yakubu Aiyegbeni (95 goals), his current form suggests he could climb further up the rankings.

Marco Silva’s Reaction to Fulham’s Defensive Errors
Fulham manager Marco Silva expressed frustration over his team’s mistakes after the match.
“We were penalized by our own mistakes. It’s clear we lost because of errors in key moments,” Silva told Sky Sports. “We created enough chances to be in front, but we gifted them goals. Raul [Jiménez] and Adama [Traoré] had big opportunities to level the game, but it was our defensive lapses that made it easy for West Ham to punish us.”
Silva also emphasized the need for improvement ahead of their next fixture, saying, “We cannot continue to make these errors if we want to compete at this level.”
What’s Next for Fulham?
Fulham will look to bounce back when they travel to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City on Saturday. With Iwobi in fine form, Fulham will aim to tighten their defense and turn their attacking efforts into a much-needed win.
Alex Iwobi’s exceptional performance underscores his growing importance to Fulham and his remarkable evolution as a player. Despite the loss, Iwobi’s two goals and career milestones highlight his consistency and determination.
With Fulham’s next challenge against Leicester City, Iwobi’s form could play a pivotal role in helping his team return to winning ways.
