Nigeria vs South Africa: Bantwana Coach Seeks Miracle Comeback in Crucial Flamingos Clash
South Africa U-17 women’s national team head coach, Ntombifuthi Khumalo, acknowledges the monumental challenge ahead as his side prepares to face Nigeria in the second leg of their 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
The Bantwana suffered a 3-1 defeat on home soil in Pretoria, putting them at a major disadvantage ahead of their crucial return fixture in Nigeria. However, despite the daunting task, Khumalo remains optimistic that his team can pull off a dramatic comeback to advance to the final qualifying round.
South Africa’s journey in the qualifiers had been dominant before meeting the Flamingos, as they thrashed Gabon with a staggering 21-2 aggregate victory in the previous round. But facing Nigeria, Africa’s most formidable force at this level, proved to be an entirely different battle.
Flamingos Showcase Dominance in Pretoria
The first leg at the Lucas Moripe Stadium was a statement performance by the Nigerian U-17 women’s team, who showcased their pedigree with a commanding display.
Shakirat Moshood set the tone for the encounter by opening the scoring in the 20th minute with a well-placed finish. Nigeria’s lead doubled just before halftime when Harmony Chidi converted from the penalty spot, giving the visitors a comfortable cushion heading into the break.
South Africa, determined not to go down without a fight, responded early in the second half. Captain Katleho Malebana stepped up and converted a penalty in the 47th minute, briefly igniting hopes of a comeback for the home side.
However, Nigeria quickly reasserted their dominance. Chidi completed her brace in the 68th minute, restoring the Flamingos’ two-goal advantage and leaving the Bantwana with an enormous mountain to climb in the return leg.
Khumalo Emphasizes Belief Ahead of Tough Second Leg
Despite the first-leg setback, the Bantwana arrived in Nigeria on Thursday with a determined mindset. Speaking after the team’s first training session in Nigeria, Khumalo acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge but insisted his players must keep believing in a turnaround.
“We arrived today (Thursday) in Nigeria,” Khumalo stated.
“It is not going to be an easy game for us since we have to climb the mountain after the loss at home. But today, we had our first session. Although we traveled from South Africa and the girls are not fully rested, we will see how it goes.
“The good thing is we don’t have any injuries, and the girls are positive. Again, it is not going to be easy for us, especially being 3-1 down. We need to try our best to come back because the race is still on. It is up to us to come stronger in the second leg.”
Flamingos Eye Qualification as South Africa Seek a Historic Comeback
The decisive second leg is scheduled for 15 March 2025 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, where Nigeria will look to secure their spot in the final qualifying round with another dominant performance.

For South Africa, overturning the two-goal deficit against a team of Nigeria’s caliber will require a near-perfect outing. The statistics are not in their favor—Nigeria has never lost a home World Cup qualifier at this level and boasts a record of qualifying for seven out of the eight U-17 Women’s World Cup tournaments. In contrast, South Africa has only managed to appear in two editions of the competition.
With 90 minutes left to play, the Bantwana know they must deliver a historic performance to keep their World Cup dream alive. Whether they can defy the odds and stun the Flamingos remains to be seen, but Khumalo’s squad refuses to surrender without a fight.
