Cyriel Dessers’ Future at Rangers Uncertain Amid Transfer Speculations
Cyriel Dessers’ Rangers Future in Doubt as January Transfer Window Nears Closure.
Rangers head coach Philippe Clement has provided an update on the uncertain future of Super Eagles striker Cyriel Kolawole Dessers. Clement hinted that the Nigerian forward might depart the club before the January transfer window shuts, sparking speculation about his next destination.
Since joining Rangers from Italian side Cremonese in 2023 for a transfer fee of €5 million, Dessers initially enjoyed the role of a first-choice forward. However, the 30-year-old’s position has become less prominent in recent weeks, with Clement favoring Hamza Igamane in attacking roles at Ibrox.
Despite being sidelined from the starting lineup, Dessers seized the opportunity to make a statement during Rangers’ emphatic 5-0 Scottish FA Cup victory over Fraserburgh. In that match, he scored a stunning hat-trick in front of the home crowd, showcasing his quality and determination to bounce back from a challenging period.
Clement’s Perspective on Dessers’ Situation
Speaking to the media, Clement praised Dessers’ professionalism and attitude while acknowledging the challenges the striker faces in securing more playing time.
“Cyriel is a great character to have in the dressing room and on the team. He works hard and keeps fighting even when he doesn’t get as many minutes as he wants,” Clement said.
The Belgian manager emphasized that the competition at Rangers is intense, and playing time must be earned. While he appreciates Dessers’ contributions, Clement admitted that the forward’s lack of regular action could lead to dissatisfaction.
“It’s natural for any player to want more minutes, but that’s football at the highest level. Cyriel has shown his desire to give everything for this club. We have discussions every week, and I know he’s committed to doing his best whenever he gets the chance.”
Future Uncertain Amid Transfer Talks
Clement didn’t shy away from addressing the possibility of Dessers leaving Rangers. With limited opportunities under the current setup, a transfer might be the best solution for all parties involved.
“It’s a difficult decision. If Cyriel leaves, we must replace him with a player of equal or better quality. On the other hand, keeping a player who becomes unhappy due to reduced minutes could also harm the team dynamic,” Clement explained.
The manager stressed that Dessers remains committed to the club, but his future hinges on whether Rangers can find an appropriate replacement should he depart.

Dessers’ Stats and Contributions to Rangers
Despite the ups and downs in his season, Dessers has made notable contributions. In 33 appearances for Rangers this campaign, he has scored 16 goals and provided five assists, averaging a goal contribution every 110 minutes.
While his performances have sometimes lacked clinical finishing, the striker’s work rate and occasional brilliance have endeared him to fans and teammates. His hat-trick against Fraserburgh serves as a testament to his potential when given the opportunity.
Rangers’ Dilemma: To Keep or Let Go?
As the January transfer window nears its conclusion, Rangers face a critical decision regarding Dessers. While his departure could free up funds and squad space for a new signing, the club must tread carefully to ensure they maintain the quality in their attacking lineup.
Clement has made it clear that he values Dessers’ commitment but understands the striker’s frustrations. “If he’s here, I know he’ll give everything for the club. If he leaves, we’ll need someone of similar quality to fill his shoes,” Clement concluded.
What’s Next for Cyriel Dessers?
As transfer rumors swirl, clubs across Europe and beyond may take an interest in the Nigerian forward. Whether Dessers remains at Rangers or embarks on a new challenge, his future will undoubtedly be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
For now, Dessers’ focus will likely remain on helping Rangers achieve their goals while proving his worth in every opportunity he gets.
