NFF President Unveils Eric Chelle's Role as Super Eagles Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, has clarified the responsibilities of Eric Chelle, the newly appointed head coach of the Super Eagles, while addressing speculation about his involvement with the CHAN team. Gusau revealed that Chelle will assume a supervisory role with the home-based Eagles but will not serve as their head coach.

The appointment of Chelle marks a significant step for Nigerian football as the 47-year-old Franco-Malian tactician takes charge of the national team. This announcement follows months of speculation after Augustine Eguavoen’s interim tenure, which began in mid-2024, came to an end.

Eric Chelle’s Background and Coaching Experience

Eric Chelle, who previously led the Malian national team to a quarter-final finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, brings valuable international experience to his new role. Although his stint with Mali was brief, it showcased his ability to compete on the continental stage. The NFF’s decision to appoint Chelle highlights their confidence in his potential to elevate the Super Eagles to new heights.

Clarifying Chelle’s Role with the CHAN Team

Amid questions surrounding his involvement with the Super Eagles Team B as they prepare for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Ogun State, the NFF has provided clarity. Speaking at Chelle’s official unveiling in Abuja on Monday, President Gusau emphasized that Chelle’s primary focus will be on the senior national team. However, he will play a crucial supervisory role with the CHAN team.

“Eric Chelle will be departing Abuja for Ikenne Remo in Ogun State to join the camp of the home-based Eagles,” Gusau told reporters. “He will take on a supervisory role as he gets familiar with the players, working closely with the coaches to oversee the team’s activities.”

This approach allows Chelle to familiarize himself with the domestic talent pool while maintaining his focus on the Super Eagles’ broader objectives.

A Fresh Start for Nigerian Football

The appointment of Chelle is part of the NFF’s broader strategy to revitalize Nigerian football and foster success at all levels. With the Super Eagles set to compete in various international tournaments, including the upcoming AFCON, expectations are high for the team to reclaim its status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

Under Chelle’s leadership, the NFF aims to strengthen the Super Eagles’ tactical approach, enhance player development, and improve overall performance. The supervisory role with the CHAN team will also help him identify emerging talents who could contribute to the senior team in the future.

Eric Chelle’s Immediate Objectives

As Chelle transitions into his new role, his immediate objectives include:

  1. Building Cohesion: Establishing a strong connection with the Super Eagles squad and integrating new players into the team seamlessly.
  2. Overseeing CHAN Preparations: Supervising the home-based Eagles as they prepare for the CHAN competition while assessing their readiness and potential.
  3. AFCON Preparation: Strategizing for the AFCON 2025 tournament, where the Super Eagles aim to reclaim their glory on the continental stage.

Challenges Ahead

Chelle faces several challenges, including managing high expectations from Nigerian fans and ensuring consistency in the team’s performance. Additionally, balancing his supervisory role with the CHAN team and focusing on the senior team’s development requires strategic planning and effective delegation.

Eric Chelle’s appointment as the head coach of the Super Eagles marks a new chapter for Nigerian football. While his primary focus will be on the senior team, his supervisory role with the CHAN team highlights his commitment to fostering talent at all levels. With clear objectives and the backing of the NFF, Chelle has an opportunity to make a significant impact on Nigerian football and restore the Super Eagles to their former glory.
