Robin Van Persie, the legendary former Arsenal and Manchester United striker, encountered a significant blow in his early coaching career as his team, Heerenveen, suffered a crushing 9-1 defeat to AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Van Persie, appointed head coach of Heerenveen earlier in the summer, is enduring a tough start in his new managerial role. With only one win in their first four matches, Heerenveen currently sits 12th in the 18-team Eredivisie standings, putting immediate pressure on the Dutchman to turn things around.
The club, which finished 11th in the Eredivisie last season, brought in Van Persie in hopes of sparking a revival. However, the recent heavy loss to AZ Alkmaar has raised concerns about whether the club can meet expectations under his leadership.

Van Persie’s coaching journey began in May 2020, when he joined Feyenoord as an assistant to Dick Advocaat. In this role, Van Persie helped train the team’s strikers in an unofficial capacity before officially becoming a field coach in May 2021. He was later promoted to co-head coach of Feyenoord’s under-18 team, guiding them to a 2023 tournament victory at the Mladen Ramljak Memorial.
On May 17, 2024, Heerenveen signed Van Persie to a two-year deal, offering him the opportunity to lead a top-tier Eredivisie team. However, the road has been bumpy so far, and the 9-1 loss marks a new low in his promising yet challenging coaching career.
Van Persie’s task now is to regroup and find a winning formula as Heerenveen looks to climb the Eredivisie table and avoid further setbacks.
