As Arsenal prepares to face Manchester United in the Premier League, the return of defender Gabriel Magalhaes will be crucial in countering the aerial threat of Benjamin Sesko.
According to Charles Watts, an Arsenal expert, Gabriel’s presence will be vital in stifling Sesko’s “Adebayor-esque” abilities.
The Challenge of Sesko
Sesko, who joined Manchester United from RB Leipzig for £73.3m, boasts a 6ft 4in frame and impressive aerial skills, having won 57.9% of his duels off the ground in the past year.
This puts him in the top 4% of forwards in the big five European leagues.
Arsenal’s weaknesses in defending set-pieces last season were well-documented, and Watts warns that Sesko could pose a significant threat in the Gunners’ penalty area.
Gabriel’s Impact
However, with Gabriel’s return, Arsenal’s defensive dynamics are set to change. Watts emphasizes that Gabriel’s aerial dominance will be crucial in neutralizing Sesko’s threat.
“When you look at the percentage of goals that Arsenal conceded from set pieces last season, the massive majority of them was when Gabriel wasn’t in the team,” Watts said. “He makes that much of a difference.”
Starting Lineup
As for Arsenal’s starting lineup, Watts believes that Kai Havertz could start ahead of Viktor Gyokeres, given his importance in defending set-pieces.
“It’s flip of the coin territory,” Watts added. “But Havertz’s experience and defensive skills might give him the edge.”
Head-to-Head History
Arsenal have a decent record against Manchester United at Old Trafford, having found the back of the net in each of their last 11 Premier League away games against the Red Devils since a 1-0 loss in November 2013.
Can Gabriel’s return and Arsenal’s attacking prowess be enough to secure a win against their fierce rivals?
